Having a studio near the shores of Lake Superior, it's very easy to get caught up in all the native myth and legend of this natural wonder. So while I'm aware of the ancient Ojibway way of life, I know very little of my own European ancestory. This brings me to the 30,000 year old cave paintings of Lascaux France, what I believe to truly be the first wildlife art that remains to this day. While these Artists didn't have to worry about the "business" of art, I'm sure other variables like ice ages, cave bears, and tending fires occupied their thoughts. In all seriousness, I'm awed by the fluid handling of their subjects, as well as the interplay between the species. One can't help but wonder what their lives and culture were like. Were there totem spirits and offerings? With this piece I'm going with the possibility that there were, with circular shapes correlating with each bison, giving us "Two sets of Three". |
